A flooded server room, back online the same day

Water leaking from above destroyed network equipment at a busy Sarasota dermatology and Mohs surgery practice. Here's how we kept the doors open.

Challenge

In November 2025, water leaked through the ceiling above Sarasota Skin's server room. It soaked the practice's firewall and network switches. With the network down, staff couldn't log in to their practice software, print, scan or send faxes, and the practice's outside accountant lost remote access to the books.

For a medical practice with a full schedule and a Mohs lab, every hour offline means patients waiting and staff working on paper.

Solution

A Network Gurus technician was on site the day we got the call. We worked in three stages:

  1. Get the practice running. We moved equipment out of the water, installed a temporary firewall and brought the network back up that same day.
  2. Restore every system. The next day we got staff back into their practice software, then fixed printing, faxing and scanning. We also set up secure remote access so the accountant could get back into QuickBooks.
  3. Rebuild properly. On November 14 we replaced the damaged Cisco switches with a new UniFi switch and gateway, then moved the servers, wireless access points and workstations onto it. We came back that Saturday to finish converting the remaining devices, so the practice opened Monday on the new network.

Before closing the job, we went back to fix the last stragglers, including the phone system's on-call settings page, which needed a new network address after the move.

Result

  • Same day: the network was back up on a temporary firewall the day we arrived.
  • Five days: the flood-damaged network was fully replaced with new equipment, with the final cutover done on a Saturday, outside clinic hours.
  • Better than before: the new UniFi network lets us monitor every device on the network remotely.

When power surges hit the building two months later, we were back on site within days to add battery backups to the affected workstations.
